What is SEO?

In short

  • Technical, on-page and ongoing work go together.
  • It makes the right pages easy to find.
  • It rewards useful, fast, clear websites.

SEO, short for search engine optimization, is the work of making a website easier for search engines to understand and for people to find. When someone searches for what a business offers, SEO helps the right pages appear.

It covers three areas. Technical SEO makes sure search engines can reach, read and index a site. On-page SEO shapes the content, titles and structure of each page around what people search for. Ongoing improvement uses data from tools such as Google Search Console to see what works and what to change.

SEO is not a one-off task or a trick. Search engines reward sites that are fast, clear and genuinely useful, so lasting SEO is mostly about building a good website and keeping it that way. It works best alongside a well-built site, as in Website Design & Development, and alongside other channels in Digital Marketing.

How search engines work.

Four stages decide whether a page can appear for a search.

  1. Crawl

Search engines send programs, often called crawlers, to follow links and discover pages. A page that nothing links to, or that is blocked, may never be found.

  2. Index

The engine reads each page and stores what it learns. Pages that are thin, duplicated or blocked from indexing may not be stored.

  3. Rank

When someone searches, the engine picks the stored pages it judges most relevant and useful, and orders them. Relevance, quality, page experience and trust all play a part.

  4. Learn

Tools such as Google Search Console show which searches bring people to a site and which pages have problems, so the work can improve.

Technical foundations.

A website search engines can read.

  • Crawling and indexing

We check that search engines can find, read and index your pages.

  • Speed and mobile

We look at how fast pages load and how the site works on a phone.

  • Structured data

We add the structured data that helps search engines understand your pages.

Why SEO matters for a business.

It is one of the few channels whose value can build over time.

  1. It reaches people who are already looking

Searchers have a need and want an answer. SEO puts your pages in front of them at that moment.

  2. It builds over time

Good pages on a sound site can keep bringing visitors without paying for each click.

  3. It builds trust

People often trust organic results, and a clear, fast, well-organized site reinforces that.

  4. It improves the website itself

Fixing speed, mobile layout and structure for search also makes the site better for visitors.

  5. It can be measured

Search Console and Analytics show impressions, clicks and visits, so progress is visible.

  6. It works with your other channels

SEO supports Performance Marketing and Social Media Marketing by giving people a strong place to land.

On the page.

Pages written and organised for search.

  • Titles and descriptions

Each page gets its own title and description, written for the search it should answer.

  • Headings and content

Page structure and copy that answer the question a visitor arrived with.

  • Internal links

Links that connect related pages, so visitors and search engines can move through the site.

Signs your website needs SEO work.

If several of these sound familiar, a review is a good next step.

  • People cannot find your business unless they search for its name
  • Important pages do not appear in Google at all
  • Your pages load slowly or look wrong on a phone
  • Many pages have little text, or repeat the same text
  • Several pages share the same title or description
  • You do not use Google Search Console or Analytics
  • Competitors appear for searches you should be found for
  • The site was built without search in mind

Start with the free website audit, which checks 16 points across search, content, mobile and sharing.

Ongoing improvement.

SEO is reviewed and refined, not done once.

  • Search Console and Analytics

We use Google Search Console and Google Analytics to see how the website performs.

  • Regular reviews

Changes are based on what the data shows, and the work continues as the business grows.

  • Retainers

Ongoing SEO is available as a retainer.

SEO techniques to avoid.

Shortcuts can cause lasting harm to a site's visibility.

  • Keyword stuffing

Repeating a phrase unnaturally makes pages worse to read and can count against them.

  • Buying links

Paying for links to manipulate rankings goes against search engine guidelines and can lead to penalties.

  • Copied content

Text taken from other sites adds nothing new and is unlikely to rank.

  • Hidden text

Text hidden from visitors but shown to search engines is a long-standing violation of guidelines.

  • Ignoring mobile

Search engines judge sites by their mobile experience, so a poor phone layout holds a site back.

  • Expecting overnight results

SEO builds gradually. Treat anyone who promises a fixed ranking by a fixed date with caution.

Questions, answered.

What is SEO?

SEO, or search engine optimization, is the work of making a website easier for search engines to understand and for people to find. It covers technical setup, page content and ongoing improvement.

What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO is the work that lets search engines crawl, understand and index a website: site structure, speed, mobile layout, indexing rules and structured data.

How long does SEO take to show results?

Results build gradually and depend on the website, the competition and the searches you want to be found for. Domeq does not promise rankings.

Is SEO included when you build a website?

Yes. Full SEO setup is part of every Domeq website project. This service is for ongoing SEO, or for a website that already exists.

Can you check my website before I commit?

Yes. The free website audit checks 16 points across search, content, mobile and sharing.

How does SEO work?

Search engines crawl pages, store them in an index and rank them when someone searches. SEO makes a site easier to crawl, index and understand, and makes its pages more useful for the searches people make. The steps are set out above.

What is the difference between SEO and paid advertising?

SEO earns visits over time through the quality of the website and its content. Paid advertising buys visits for as long as the campaign runs. Many businesses use both. See Performance Marketing for paid campaigns.

Can I do SEO myself?

Some basics can be done in-house, such as clear page titles, useful content and connecting Google Search Console. Technical fixes and a long-term plan usually benefit from expertise.

Does SEO work for local businesses?

Local searches work differently from national ones, with factors such as location and business profiles. Get in touch with your market and we will tell you what can be done.
